Nikole Fraser and Lauren Knox are familiar with the satisfaction derived from commitment to a cause and fundraising to further an organization's goals.

During their final year at Wilfrid Laurier University, Fraser spearheaded an art-based event as a graduate project that raised more than $5,000 for breast cancer.

The roommates collaborated on the event planning logistics, marketing and promotion.

The two women are continuing to use this commitment to community endeavors by working with members of the Oakville Art Society, Sovereign House and with independent artists to coordinate the Oakville Artists "Yard" Sale on Saturday, Sept. 6 at four locations in Oakville.

Fraser and Knox are working with this group of local artists to ensure that this event engages both the artist community and the residents of Oakville.

Funds raised will support the $Million or More Oakville ($Million or More Oakville) campaign and the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

"Having heard Stephen Lewis speak at the university was an inspiring experience that gave us a window into the pain of Africans especially women and children who are living with the realities of HIV/AIDS. Knowing that millions of innocent children were struggling with the disease while living in poverty was an overwhelming reality," said Knox.

"Working on the Oakville Artists "Yard" Sale is my small way of contributing to the work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation," said Knox.

"Oakville has a wonderful pool of artists and artisans that use this community as part of their inspiration for their work. Knowing that these artists were willing to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of their art and unused arts supplies drew me to the project," said Fraser.

$MOMO has an ambitious goal to raise $1 million over the next year.

With the community's support and participation, this goal can be achieved. According to the Stephen Lewis Foundation for just $140 a vulnerable girl in Zambia will attend school and live in an empowering, positive environment for a year.

When she graduates with vocational training, business start-up skills, or an undergraduate certification, she will have the capacity and self-esteem to build a future for herself.

The registration fee of $20 for seven artists will raise enough to send this girl to school and put her on the path toward a brighter future.

Fraser and Knox encourage all interested artists to contact them at artistsforMOMO@hotmail.com to get more information on registering for Oakville Artists "Yard" Sale, or visit www.millionormoreSLF.ca to download a registration form.
