Steve Dumoulin has been named captain of the Grimsby Peach Kings.
A team meeting held last week ended with Steve Dumoulin being named captain, alongside assistants Kyle Fraser, Jason Recek and Justin Rogal.
But three games in, it has been the spirited play of linemates Stevan Manojlovic and Connor Rilett that has paced the Junior C club to its record of 3-0.
Rilett scored twice Friday night, including the game-winner, and Manojlovic added a goal and two assists, to lead Grimsby past the Glanbrook Rangers, 4-2 on home ice.
Dumoulin added an insurance marker into an empty net with 17 seconds left in the third period.
"Rilett left off last year in stride," explained head coach Dave Brownridge of last year's playoff sparkplug. "He's always had a great scoring touch, but he's a good two-way hockey player now. I've got no problem putting him out on the ice in all situations, and he seems to be the guy putting the puck in the net right now."
As for his linemate - former Sudbury Wolves tough guy Manojlovic - he's already showing the coaching staff everything they wished for and more, said Brownridge.
"He's a big man who can skate pretty good and is very strong on the puck," he said. "He's only going to get stronger around the net. It's great to have his experience."
Despite allowing a goal on the third shot of the game, rookie goalie Ian Jones stopped 20 of 22 shots for the first win of his Junior C career.
"He played excellent," said Brownridge, bouncing back from a nerve-wracking powerplay goal to play "pretty solid."
The Peach Kings peppered Glanbrook goaltender Mark Idzikowski with 62 shots, including a slew of "glorious chances."
"They're starting to move the puck well and are passing much better... now we just need to put the puck in the net," said Brownridge. "Once we keep putting the puck in the net, we'll have a lot of fun."
As for the team-elected leadership group, Brownridge said he respects what each of Dumoulin, Fraser, Recek and Rogal have done for the team in year's past and forward.
The Peach Kings will face off at home versus the Dundas Blues this Friday, before taking on the Chippawa Riverhawks on Sunday.
