The Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit, along with Oakville Place Shopping Mall, The Oakville Beaver and Wave 94.7 FM, is inviting members of the community to come out and lace up their sneakers at the 2008 Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer event.

It is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 26 at Oakville Place Shopping Mall and participants will once again have a chance to walk the indoor track as they show their support in the fight against breast cancer.

People of all ages and fitness levels will enjoy the leisurely 5km walk. Families not yet ready for the full 5km have the chance to enjoy an easier 1km Family Fun Walk.

The morning will begin at 8 a.m. with participant registration and treats from Tim Hortons.

At 8:30 a.m., Jazzercise will lead a warm up exercise.

At 9 a.m., the walk will officially get started.

Oakville's own The Last Minute Band will be back by popular demand with musical entertainment during the walk.

Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer is the only fundraising walk in Oakville that raises money in support of breast cancer.

Since its inception in 2006, Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer in Oakville has seen more than 400 participants walk more than 2,000 km and raised $39,000 towards vital breast cancer research and support services funded by the Canadian Cancer Society.

Registration for Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer 2008 has officially opened.

"There are two easy ways for participants to register to join us on Oct. 26," said Lisa Moffatt, fundraising co-ordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Unit.

"Participants can register online at www.cancer.ca/takingsteps Once you're registered you can set up your own personalized fundraising page. The page is really easy to set up and it's a terrific way tell your friends why you're taking steps and invite people to pledge you," said Moffatt.

Participants can also register at the Oakville Unit office at 635 Fourth Line, Unit 51, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by calling 905-845-5231.

Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer is a pledge-based walk, so there are no registration fees.

Adult participants who raise a minimum of $100 and children under 14 who raise a minimum of $30 will receive a new Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer shirt.

In 2008, an estimated 22,400 women across Canada will be diagnosed with breast cancer, making the disease the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canadian women.

Breast cancer is also the second most common cause of death in women.

This year alone, an estimated 5,300 Canadian women will die from the disease.

More than statistics, these are the lives of women in our community -- our mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and colleagues.
