The same OMB ruling determined that 300 residential units in three buildings, ranging in height from five to eight storeys, could be erected on the remaining portion of the property.

"It's the final piece of the puzzle in completing the South Shell Waterfront Park," Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said. "This dedication of land will allow us to build a continuous lakeside park with enhanced public access. Public waterfront property is highly sought after, so acquiring these lands at no cost to taxpayers is a win for Oakville."

Located along Lakeshore Road, east of Burloak Drive and west of Great Lakes Boulevard in Bronte, the land completes the 3.3 hectare South Shell Waterfront Park that will span 800-metres of Oakville waterfront.

The South Shell Waterfront Park will provide linkages to Shell Park, the Petro-Canada Parkette, the eastern portion of the Palm Place lands and the Waterfront Trail, and preserve much of the existing natural areas. Phase 1 of the park construction is scheduled to begin this fall.

"Public parks and open spaces like South Shell Waterfront Park are important components of a healthy and active community," Domenic Lunardo, Commissioner of Community Services said. "Our goal was to create a pedestrian-friendly park for people of all ages and abilities. This park definitely caters to the recreational and open space needs of Oakville residents."

Phase 1 construction of the South Shell Waterfront Park will include lakefront viewing and seating areas, an extended waterfront trail and an extensive planting program to support the existing wildlife and migratory bird habitat. Future park development will include park shelters, washroom facilities, redevelopment of the playground areas and enhanced beach access.
