Ever wanted to experience that same rush of excitement and adrenaline as the contestants on the hit reality show The Amazing Race without having to get on a plane?

Well start training.

This September, members of the Oakville community will have the opportunity to challenge their minds, bodies and teamwork skills in a local re-creation of the popular scavenger-hunt style travel show.

The Amazing Race Against Time will be a fundraising event open to local teens and young adults across Oakville.

The event will help support the fundraising goals of the ongoing $Million or More Oakville ($MOMO) campaign, raising funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

The Amazing Race Against Time is on Sunday, Sept. 28 and is expected to draw participants from around the Oakville area.

Those wishing to participate must pay a registration fee of $25 and raise a minimum of $150 for each individual team member.

Registration deadline is Sept. 14 and the race kit pickup day and fundraising deadline is Sept. 21.

The event is open to all ages, but those under age 18 must submit a consent form signed by their parent or guardian.

On race day, 50 teams (four people per team) will compete for three hours in a series of thrilling and challenging tasks that will take them all around the downtown Oakville area.

The tasks will be designed to challenge individuals' mental and physical capabilities and encourage creativity and teamwork amongst the groups.

The race destinations will allow participants to interact with local businesses as well as historical community landmarks in a competitive and strategic area-wide event.

Teams will work to collect points and passport stamps throughout the race and beat their competitors to the finish line.

Winners of the race will not only win bragging rights around the community, but will be able to select from a series of prizes up for grabs.

The Amazing Race Against Time, a name that reflects a creative twist on the popular television series and Stephen Lewis's book, A Race Against Time, is the brainchild of a group of six recent university graduates, all Oakville natives, who have been inspired to help reach the fundraising goals set out by the $MOMO campaign.

Team leader Gillian Zimmerman points out that the girls feel fortunate to have found a way to give back to the Oakville community and support the continued efforts of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

"My friends and I have led very happy and comfortable lives. It has been an eye-opening experience for us to learn about the foundation and the AIDS pandemic in Africa. The hard work we've put into pulling together this race has allowed for an enormous amount of personal growth for each one of us," said Zimmerman.

As well as a fun day of challenging competition the girls hope the event will promote awareness and educate younger members of the community about the tragic AIDS crisis facing the lives of so many people in nations throughout Africa and around the world.

They hope that their hard work and dedication throughout the planning phases of the race will ultimately pay off, estimating that the event will raise approximately $30,000 for the $MOMO campaign.
