
With an unstoppable drive and enthusiasm for volunteering, Harmgardt, as president of Blakelock High School's World Council, organized campaigns to Stop Violence Against Women and celebrate Black History Month. She led two fundraising drives for a school in India for HIV-positive children, and for Water for Humanity.
Harmgardt leads Teens Organizing Local Events for Seniors, a group that to date has presented 38 variety shows at local seniors' residences. She has also written a tribute book, raising $8,800 for Killbear Provincial Park on Georgian Bay.
Harmgardt earned the scholarship in connection with her book on Killbear.
The 250-page collection of stories is a park fundraiser. Entitled Killbear, Thanks for the Memories, it has raised $8,800 to construct a day-use shelter and operate nature programs.
Her close bond with her grandparents, led Harmgardt to co-found Teens Organizing Local Events for Seniors.
Harmgardt was also recently named an Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year.
