TAKING NOTES Taiwan's celebrity chefs Claire and Kevin look on as Oakville's Liaison College Chef Instructor Steve Popp gives a lesson on cooking various Canadian foods. The pair host a TV show in Taiwan and are touring the country to share Canadian cooking practices with their viewers.
And last week, Taiwan's celebrity chefs - known simply as Kevin and Claire - were in Oakville to get a taste of Canadian cooking.
The husband-and-wife team, renowned for hosting a cooking TV show out of the restaurant they own in Taipei, received a cooking lesson from Liaison College chef instructor Steve Popp.
"Kevin and Claire are traveling across Canada, and their function here is to go to different areas to find out about Canada's regional cuisine," said Liason College's Susanne Mikler.
"They want to see what the chef is teaching his students, so they'll almost be like students."
Kevin Hsu and Claire Tseng's mission is to find out as much as they can about Canada's foods and report back to the nation of Taiwan by sharing what they've learned on their TV show, New Healthy Era.
It airs six days a week and has more than four million viewers.
The duo's month-long Canadian tour started in British Columbia a few weeks back, and after their Oakville stop, Kevin and Claire were off to Quebec City.
Armed with a video camera and note pad, they attended the Oakville Liaison College kitchen ready to learn and capture how things are done in Canada.
Chef Popp and a handful of his students came up with a menu featuring Ontario food, including lamb.
"It's the best in the country, it's known for its mild yet distinctive flavour," Popp said. "It's probably the signature meat that we do in Ontario."
Ontario lake trout, Canadian cheeses and Ontario produce were also on the menu for the guest chefs. The sit-down meal, which came after the cooking lesson, was served along with a selection of Ontario wines.
But Popp wasn't the only one teaching. He was also feeding off the knowledge Kevin and Claire brought to the table.
"It's great to pick another professional's brain," Popp said. "There can be a lot to be learned."
Kevin and Claire are well-known for creating the Natural Low Fat Healthy Meal Series, and have so far published two books, with a third one on the way.
"It's really exciting to have them here - they're the celebrity chefs of Taiwan," said Mikler.
The duo's trip was organized in partnership with Agriculture Canada, and finishes on Aug. 20. Kevin and Claire will start filming a new season of their TV show in September.
Oakville's Liaison College is located on the second floor of 2273 Royal Windsor Dr.
