TALENT TIME BENEFIT SHOW: Pilgrim Wood Public School student Taylor Fitzpatrick rehearses for A Celebration of Talent, a student fundraiser for the rural Sri Lankan village they have adopted through Free the Children. The rehearsal was held Monday with the students performing at the talent show Tuesday. All proceeds for the event will be going to the cause that enables students at the school to provide educational necessities for children in the adopted village.

CLEANING UP: West River Resident Ted Colin was among the many volunteers cleaning up Hogs Back Park during the Earth Day Cleanup on Saturday morning. The Hogs Back Park cleanup was among 30 at various nature sites in Oakville organized by the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights.
SWELTERING PERFORMANCES: Vince Guerriero, as Reverend Lawrence T. Shannon, Nick Forrow, as Nonno-Jonathan Coffin, and Catherine Hartnett, as Hannah Jelkes, star in Burl-Oak Theatre Group's production of Night of the Iguana opening Thursday at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts.
SPRING DREAMS: Young Will Grecco and retired physician Dr. Susan Curran at work one Sunday afternoon last year in the organic garden located in the park beside the Oakville Arena.
Sean Grecco pitched in to help. Curran was instrumental in the establishment of the garden last spring and is looking forward to its second season this year. There is even a Community Foundation of Oakville grant of $2,000 in hand to expand and improve the effort this year. Planting is expected to take place around Victoria Day weekend, but volunteers are being cultivated now.

VENOM DEADLY AT PROVINCIALS: The Oakville Venom bantam girls 1 team defeated Brantford 36-17 to win the Ontario Basketball Association Division 1 championship. GOING FOR GOLD: Diana Matheson and the Canadian women's soccer team earned a spot at the Beijing Olympics with a second-place finish at the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Mexico. It will be the first-ever trip to the Games for the team.

GOLD MEDALISTS OFF TO OBA: Oakville Vytis Break 1 bantam boys basketball team won five straight games to win the gold medal at the Niagara Falls Red Raiders tournament. Oakville was 3-0 in round-robin pool play. They followed that up by defeating the hosts in the semifinals and then topped Hamilton's Blessed Sacrament in the final. The Vytis earned a silver medal at the Blessed Sacrament Tournament the following weekend in Dundas, losing a close final 57-52 to the Toronto Triple Threat. Team members are: Jake Babic, Perry Billard, Owen Coulthard, Oliver Dooley, Chris Lam, Max Lambert, Spencer Marion, Rasheed Smith, Matthew Thompson (the Niagara tournament's MVP) and Dennis Xu, head coach Terry Coulthard and assistant coach Rohan Thompson. The team will compete in the Ontario Basketball Association championship tournament this weekend.
